New Year's Resolutions...or New YOU Revolution?
Its that time again. A year is ending and another one begins, full of hope, a promise of better things to come, greater commitment to make this "my best year yet!"
Pledges will be made to -
*Get more sleep
*Manage my time better
*Finally keep up with my journaling
*Be less angry and stressed
*Spend more time with family, and on and on and on it goes...
And good intentioned folks will try in earnest to accomplish these goals, large or small. For a week, maybe two, before LIFE, BUSINESS AS USUAL, comes roaring back in like a freight train out of control, to derail even the best of resolutions.
And once again, we feel like a failure, like we're never going to get "IT" right, and we walk away from our Resolutions, our commitments and hopes of self-improvement and a better life- a better world- and once again, consciously or unconsciously we make a decision to accept the "status quo" in ourselves, in our lives and in the world around us.
I know, all to well, that feeling of giving up, giving in, once again and reconciling the harsh, negative feelings toward myself with a casual, "Maybe NEXT year", or "Oh, who cares? They were dumb goals anyway!"
The effort to make myself feel better about my perceived failure only served to reinforce the subconscious thought, "I'm never going to get this right." "There is something fundamentally wrong with me."
That was me at one time...for many, many years, the proverbial hamster in the New Year's wheel. And then awakening began. Slowly at first, a change of thought about a matter, forming a new habit that better expressed the real me without really making any conscious effort to lose a bad one, they just begin to fall away organically as they are replaced with new thoughts-higher thinking. I discovered little by little, one day at a time, one moment at a time, sometimes one breath at a time that transformation was possible. And it had nothing to do with what the rest of the world was doing, thinking, planning or being busy about.
It had only to do with me. My thoughts. My soul. My consciousness. I learned that I, and I alone was responsible for me. That I, and I alone create the world that I live in through my thoughts, through my intentions, through what I choose to focus my consciousness on. I am not, nor have I ever been, truth be told, a victim of circumstance or series of unfortunate events. Through the creative power of my thoughts and intentions, I came to realize that I have the ability, as do we all, to determine the life experiences I will either enjoy or endure.
I have always been the driving force, through intention and focused consciousness, crafting my own story...good, bad or indifferent. When things in my life in the past have been painful, dysfunctional, chaotic and just plain lousy, I can now look back at those times and see clearly what my thoughts were creating and attracting into my life experience.
Through the Law of Attraction, I consciously or unconsciously manifested the very events, people, health crises, financial struggles, relationship issues, etc., that I would have told you I was trying desperately to avoid! By focusing my thoughts and intentions on these negative aspects of my life, I actually and inadvertently attracted more of the same. A basic law of physics-Like attracts like. Someone once told me, "when you know better, you do better." I set a conscious intention each day now "to do better." Not better than anyone else, life is not a competition, but perhaps better than I did the day before. My goal today and every day is to be the best and highest version of myself. I am still learning and seeking who and what that is, and I'm quite sure it will continue to evolve...and for that, I am grateful.
For me, 2016 was a year of many lessons learned, of feeling as though the "scales" had fallen from my eyes and for the first time in my life, I was seeing the world and everyone and everything in it, anew. Most importantly, I learned much about me. I learned to place the most value on the development of my own soul. Asking myself, daily if need be,
Who am I?
Where am I?
Why am I where I am?
What do I intend to do about it?
The answers to these questions allow me to focus my intention on what is truly for my own greatest and highest good. They help me understand on a deeper level what my soul's truest longing and desire is. The answers allow me to be more authentically me. I am ready to lay aside resolutions and embrace personal REVOLUTION!
The changes that bring about this transformational revolution are sometimes big, sometimes small. For me, mostly small, but when added together one at a time, day after day, the resulting awakening of consciousness is anything but.
I can be (and so can we all)-
More compassionate, less judgemental,
More loving and kind, less bitter and unforgiving
More generous, less selfish
More joyful, less disagreeable
I can listen more and talk less, breathe-slowly, mindfully, deeply. I can connect with my own soul on a daily basis through meditation, prayer and affirmations...and in so doing, I can make more meaningful connections to every living thing around me. These are my choices for 2017. This is what I will work to co-create with my soul.
What will YOU choose for 2017...Resolutions or a personal Revolution?
I'd like to end with several quotes that have been particularly meaningful to me this past year in the hope that they may serve to inspire you as well. Happy New Year and Namaste, my friend!
"Never, and I mean never, allow anyone else's ideas of who you can or can't become sully your dream or pollute your imagination. This is your territory, and a 'Keep Out' sign is a great thing to erect at all entrances to your imagination." Dr. Wayne Dyer
"Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery." Dr. Wayne Dyer
“The deepest secret is that life is not a process of discovery, but a process of creation. You are not discovering yourself, but creating yourself anew. Seek therefore, not to find out Who You Are, but seek to determine Who You Want to Be.” Neale Donald Walsch
And from the Dalai Lama-
Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.
Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.
This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.
Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.
If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.
We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.
